What are Portlets?

Portlets are containers for information.  They may hold links to applications; provide snapshots of key information about an application, much like a gauge on a dashboard; highlight a top 5 list, link, event, or news item; provide quick access to functions such as application logins or report generation; or simply contain text people need to notice, such as key facts about an application or project.  Virtually any type of information can be held in a portlet.

The portlets shown in the image above, contain application information (Facilities and CPI), events (Calendar), links to documentation (Documents), and links to news items (Site News), among other things.
